Summary
Bill C-300, also known as the Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention Act, requires the Canadian government to create a plan to help prevent suicide. The government needs to talk with non-profit groups, provincial and territorial governments, and different federal departments to create this plan. The plan should recognize that suicide is a public health issue and a health and safety priority. A specific part of the government will be in charge of sharing information about suicide, making statistics available, helping different groups work together, defining the best ways to prevent suicide, and using research to help prevent suicide.
Within 180 days of the law coming into effect, the government has to start talking to the different groups to gather information and make sure the plan fits in with what is already being done. Every two years, for the first four years and ongoing, the part of the government in charge will need to write a report to Canadians about what progress has been made and what activities have been done to help prevent suicide. This law aims to bring different groups together to prevent suicide by sharing information, promoting research, and educating the public.
