Summary

Bill C-42, also known as the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, changes the rules around owning and using firearms in Canada. It makes some of the rules about getting a gun license simpler and clearer. The Bill also limits the power that chief firearms officers have. The goal is to make the system for licensing guns easier to understand and use.

This law also makes changes to the Criminal Code. It strengthens the rules about orders that stop people from having weapons, especially guns, if they are found guilty of a crime involving violence in the home. This is to help protect people from domestic violence.

Finally, the Bill defines what a "non-restricted firearm" is. It also gives the government the power to decide if a firearm should be considered non-restricted or restricted. It also allows for sharing of information on commercial importations of firearms.

In short, Bill C-42 aims to simplify gun licensing, strengthen rules against domestic violence, and give the government more power to decide what kinds of guns are allowed.
