Summary

Bill C-238, also known as the National Strategy for Safe and Environmentally Sound Disposal of Lamps Containing Mercury Act, focuses on creating a plan to safely get rid of lamps that have mercury in them. The goal is to protect the environment and people's health by making sure these lamps are disposed of properly.

The Minister of the Environment must work with provincial and territorial governments, as well as other interested groups, to come up with this national strategy. The strategy will look at the best ways to dispose of these lamps, set rules for the places that handle the disposal, and create a plan to teach people why it's important to dispose of them safely.

The Minister needs to create a report that explains the national strategy. This report must be presented to both the Senate and the House of Commons by a certain date. The report will also be available on the Department of the Environment's website. Every five years, the Minister must review the strategy and create another report on how well it is working, with any suggestions for improvement.
