Summary
Bill C-21 makes changes to the Criminal Code, the Firearms Act, the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
In the Criminal Code, the bill increases the maximum prison time for some weapons offenses. It also lets people ask for emergency orders to stop someone from having guns. The bill makes some guns illegal and creates new crimes for computer data about guns. It also adds firearm parts to certain offenses.
In the Firearms Act, the bill stops people with protection orders or domestic violence convictions from getting gun licenses. It limits who can buy and sell handguns, cartridge magazines, and gun parts. The bill also makes new rules about importing ammunition and firearm parts. It requires chief firearms officers to suspend licenses if they think the holder is no longer eligible and lets the government share information about gun trafficking with law enforcement. Businesses can not advertise firearms in a way that promotes violence.
The Nuclear Safety and Control Act is changed to give nuclear security officers the power of peace officers at high-security nuclear sites. It also lets these sites have firearms and prohibited weapons.
The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act changes which minister is in charge of policies about people entering Canada with a crime. It also says that committing certain offenses when entering Canada is a reason to be denied entry.
