Summary

Bill C-26 is about making Canada's computer systems safer. It wants to protect important services like phone lines, pipelines, and banks from cyber attacks. The bill is split into two main parts.

Part 1 changes the Telecommunications Act. It says that keeping phone and internet systems safe is a main goal. The government can now tell phone and internet companies what to do (or not do) to protect these systems. There will be fines for companies that don't follow the rules. The government can also stop certain products from being used if they are seen as a threat.

Part 2 creates a new law called the Critical Cyber Systems Protection Act. This law is about protecting computer systems that are very important to Canada. The government can name services and systems as "vital" if they are key to national security or public safety. Companies that run these vital systems must create plans to protect them from cyber threats. They also need to report any cyber attacks. The government can order these companies to take specific actions to protect their systems.
