Summary

Bill C-320 seeks to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act. The main goal of this bill is to make sure that victims of crimes get more information about when an offender might be released.

Specifically, the bill wants to change the law so that when victims are told about dates when an offender might be eligible for things like temporary absences or parole, they also get an explanation of how those dates were decided. This includes explaining how eligibility and review dates for temporary absences and parole are determined, as well as how release dates for temporary absence, work release, parole, or statutory release are determined.

The bill includes coordinating amendments to address the scenario where it comes into force at the same time as, or before or after, section 6 of another act, “An Act to Bring Fairness for the Victims of Violent Offenders”. The coordinating amendments ensure the provisions are applied correctly regardless of which section comes into force first.

In short, Bill C-320 aims to provide victims with a clearer understanding of the offender release process by requiring explanations alongside important dates.
